NorDubCo Staff

The NorDubCo staff consists of a chief executive, administrator and a small number of project researchers and research associates.

Deiric Ó Broin has been Chief Executive of NorDubCo since August 1999. For some years previously he was employed as an economic policy analyst in the private sector. From 1995-1997 he worked in the Office of Labour Affairs in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and in the Office of the Tánaiste. He is a graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology, National College of Industrial Relations, UCC where he obtained a MBS, and UCD, where he completed a MA and PhD. He is a full member of the Institution of Economic Development, the professional body for those involved in economic development policy, the Regional Studies Association, the international learned society concerned with analysis of regions and sub national issues.

Jean Nelson took up the position of Administrator for NorDubCo in November 1997. A number of years prior to that she worked in the Personnel Section of the Central Statistics Office as secretary to the Director. She was also secretary to the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland. Following this she was employed in the private sector in the running of the family shipping business.

Brian Costelloe recently joined NorDubCo as a project researcher. He is a graduate of the Dublin Institute of Technology MSc Sustainable Development programme. He previously received a BA (Hons) from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. His current research examines the impact of ongoing and proposed infrastructural development on the region’s business community and its ability to trade.

Pauline Logan has worked with NorDubCo since 2002 and focuses primarily on the leveraging of the North Dublin research base for the economic and social development of the region. Prior to joining NorDubCo, Pauline was Enterprise Officer in Dublin City University (DCU) for three years. Working within the President's Office, her role was to promote entrepreneurship among students and DCU staff, to provide practical support to those with an interest in establishing new businesses and to form links between DCU and relevant external companies and bodies. She also set up and managed a Plato Network (of 90 SMEs) in Wicklow and South East Dublin (1996-1999) and was Associate Director with Quaestus Strategy and Marketing Consultants (1989-1996). She has an MBA from DCU.

Helen McGrath has been a research associate with NorDubCo since 2003. She obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) in Property Economics from the University of Dublin in 2000 and a Ph.D. in Economics from Dublin City University in 2006. She is currently a lecturer in the DIT Faculty of the Built Environment. Her most recent publication Industrial Clusters in Local and Regional Economies was published by Glasnevin Publishing in December 2008. Tara Connolly has recently joined NorDubCo as a research associate. She obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin in 2004 and an MSc in Sustainable Development from DIT in 2009. She is currently working with Sustainable Energy Ireland.

Eugene Waters has been a research associate with NorDubCo since 2005. He is currently Community Partnerships Manager at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Previously he was Project Development Manager at Notting Hill Housing Trust, where he worked with residents to establish a Credit Union in Hammersmith and Fulham, and a Principal Officer at the London Borough of Newham, where he worked on civic renewal and community development projects. He holds a BA (Hons) in Human Development from St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra and an MRes in European Public Policy from Birkbeck, University of London. His most recent research was published as Governing Below the Centre: Local Governance in Ireland. It can be purchased online via www.tascnet.ie.

Maria Dunphy recently completed the MSc in Community and Local Development programme in the Dublin Institute of Technology’s School of Spatial Planning. She obtained a BA (Hons) in Geography and Archaeology from University College Dublin in 2008. At present she is carrying out research examining the potential for establishing a Community Platform in the Finglas area.

Stephen Nolan joined NorDubCo as a research associate in 2008  and worked on a research project on the evolution of Irish local development policy. He obtained a BA (Hons) in History from UCD in 2007 and a MSc in Community and Local Development from the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2009.

Sarah McGee recently joined NorDubCo as a research associate and is currently conducting research into community accessibility and public transportation in Dublin. She completed the MSc in Community and Local Development from the Dublin Institute of Technology, and received an honours BA (Hons) in Geography and Anthropology from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth in 2009.

Hilary Murphy joined NorDubCo as a research officer in 2010 and is currently working on a research project examining the impact of the establishment of the National Asset Management Agency on North Dublin. Hilary graduated from the BSc (Hons) Spatial Planning programme in DIT in 2000 and the MSc Sustainable Development programme in the DIT’s School of Spatial Planning in 2010. She subsequently worked as a land use planner in the Railway Procurement Agency with particular involvement in the route selection process, EIS and feasibility studies.  Her past experience includes research for the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government regarding Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines, designing sustainability plans and policies for companies and research in the area of eco-innovation.

Vanessa Mullen joined NorDubCo as a research associate and is currently working on a research project examining the impact of the establishment of the National Assets Management Agency on North Dublin. She graduated from DIT’s School of Real Estate and Construction Economics with a BSc in Property Economics (2008) and MSc in Local and Community Development from the DIT’s School of Spatial Planning (2010). 

Brian Gallwey graduated from the DIT with a BSc in Property Economics (2008) and a MSc in Community and Local Development (2010). Since then he has worked with a North Dublin-based property development company and Ballymun Regeneration Limited, the company charged with overseeing Europe’s largest urban regeneration project. He joined NorDubCo as a research associate in 2010. He is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at UCD’s School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy.

Yulin Sun holds an undergraduate degree in English from Dalian University and a MBS (International Business). Yulin worked for a number of years in Marketing and Sales in both China and Ireland. Yulin is working as a research associate in NorDubCo for The Green Way – Dublin’s Cleantech Cluster and studying on MSc in Sustainable Development programme in the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Mark McGarrity joined NorDubCo as a research associate in 2011 and is working for The Green Way – Dublin’s Cleantech Cluster. Mark graduated with a BA (Hons) in European Studies. He has over 10 years plus international business experience and  recently returned to higher education to study on the MSc in Sustainable Development programme in the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Ciarán Boulter is an intern currently studying at Coláiste Íde for FETAC Level 6 in PC Networking and Maintenance. Previously Ciaran worked as an Engineering Design Technician in the Railway Procurement Agency and subsequently as a Senior Engineering Technician with Arup Consulting Engineers, Ireland. Ciaran is updating and overhauling the Nordubco.ie and NDCC.ie websites.
